What Are Water Blisters? Causes of Blisters and its treatment

What Are Water Blisters?

Water blisters are composed of blood serum, minus the clotting agents and blood cells. When the body discovers an injury on the outer layer of skin, it sends blood to the area to heal and cool the effective skin. Act as a shielding guard, the serum fills the wound and prevents further harm from taking place. These painful bumps filled with water appear most frequently on the hands and the feet but can form anywhere on the body.

How To Recognize A Blister

Unlike blood blisters, the water variety appears like a bubble of water. Single blisters may appear wherever the body needs healing.

These pockets of serum come in different forms, from round to oval. Small blisters may look like pimples, while large blisters can be the size of a coin, depending on its cause.

Causes of Blisters

There are different possible reasons for a blister to occur. Some of them are as follows:

  • Friction
  • Sunburn
  • Exposure to heat
  • Electrical burns
  • Chickenpox
  • Herpes and cold sores
  • Contact dermatitis

Though these are the common reasons, they are not the exclusive causes of water blisters. Blisters can also cause by skin conditions, such as: pemphigus, porphyrias, epidermolysis bullosa, and dermatitis herpetiformis.

Treatment of Blisters

Taking proper care of a blister is necessary to avoid any pain or discomfort during the healing process. For many parts, water blisters do not need treatment. The blister will heal on its own in a few days or weeks, depending on the size. However, certain things can slow down healing, such as infection and position.

The best way to take care of a blister is to avoid what caused it. Beyond that, there are several home remedies to help the skin look and feel better. Some of the authentic treatments are protecting the area with bandages, applying aloe vera, and giving it lots of time to heal.
